The island of Mljet is situated near wonderful city of Dubrovnik, in a group of southern dalmatian islands. This is the main reason why Mljet has always been a target for demanding tourists, fans of untouched nature and wanderers on the track of legends about Odysseus, st. Paul,...Thanks to its splendour, it is ranked among the top 10 most beautiful islands of the world. Mljet is one of the most beautiful of Croatia's islandsPark of the island has been given National Park status, designating it area of outstanding natural beauty because of its lush greenery. Almost three-quarters o fthe island is coverd by forests of Mediterranean pine, oak and undergrowth. Perhaps the best features of all are the salt water lakes – Malo (Small) and Veliko (Great) jezero. Small lake is connected with Big lake ba a small channel while another connects Veliko lake with the open sea. To make it all the more fascinatnig, there is ans island on the lake on which stands a Benedictine monastery and the Church of St mary – build in the 12th century. You can also find Roman remains all over the island, including palatial ruins. But not everything belongs to the past. Mljet also has some delightful villages where the local people live, proudly enjoying their remarkable islands. Mljet makes a great location for nature lovers and those who really want to get away from it all in an island environment. You can, of course, take a trip across the channel to Dubrovnik an the mainland. The Adriatic Sea here is deliciously refreshing and clear so snorkellers will have a wonderful opportunity to explore. There are also a number of paths for walking and cycling.
